More about Bridgeport Rescue Mission's 2014 Restore Hope Banquet
This Thursday, October 2nd, Southport Congregational Church recieved the Church Compassion in Action honoree award at Bridgeport Rescue Mission's 2014 Restore Hope Banquet for the works of In Our Own Backyard this summer. Laura Whitmore gave a fabulous speech on behalf of the church and this organization and we would like to share it with all of you...
On behalf of all the members of SCC, we would like to thank BRM for this honor.
We would also like to thank God for the opportunity to serve BRM and all the wonderful people that they help.
We have all heard the scripture verse “with God, all things are possible”, and if I were to ask which of those words is the most important, most of you would say God…. But I think the critical word there is the word “with”.
It’s not that God alone makes all things possible It's not that the good works of each one of us makes all things possible. It's when we faithfully, honestly and lovingly join with God we can help bring about great possibilities.
SCC loves supporting the great works of BRM through monetary donations. But we have really benefitted from the hands-on work that our members do through In Our Own Backyard. We have done landscaping, painting, building repairs, prepared cookouts, served meals, helped Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentines and Christmas parties.
We have been blessed to be able to meet and become friends with many of the students and guests at BRM. Being “with” them, has made all the difference in our being able to help God bring some love and care into their lives.
And we are honored to be able to reach out our hands to give a hand up to our neighbors. But it’s not really the church or any other organization that deserves the credit and honor this evening.
It’s the clients who come to Bridgeport Rescue Mission – Many of whom are there because of circumstances within their control, some beyond their control, But each of whom took control of their lives the moment they committed to the New Life programs of BRM It was at that moment, with prayerful thought and intentionality that they joined with God And they begin to make all things possible in their lives.
And while we are very honored to be recognized this way, we stand and applaud all of the students who have joined with God and have benefited from the fabulous work of the Bridgeport Rescue Mission,
Students who have done great works and great deeds in their own lives and who clearly are living the scripture, with God, all things are possible.
